Technology @ USC • Connecting / Logging In • One login (Active Directory) – appears as DS on login screen • Servers • Course related, personal storage, application & research-related • VIP – vip.sc.edu(manage USC resources) • Course schedule, passwords, paychecks, ordering software, Carolina card • BlackBoard - blackboard.sc.edu(class related materials) • UTS offers short courses on aspects of BB • Personal Computers on the USC Network • Requirements for ethernet connections • Active virus protection app. and provide machine’s MAC address to Lynette. • Wireless networks • indoor & outdoor networks (you should use attwifi or uscstudent)

  3. General Access Info. Almost all access to machines/printers/servers is tied to your DS (domain server) login (Network UserID). You can change this on VIP.

  4. Things you won’t remember until you need them! • Disk Storage • storage space for course-related needs is requested by instructor • Geography has a server that you may request 2 gig on (CoGeogMaptube) • shared, non-protected server/space called “xplat” good temporary solution • Web space • the department & University does not maintain a web server for personal or professional webspace.. BUT the GGSA has • Printing/Scanning/Plotting • charges for printing are tied to your Carolina Card account ! • add money to a Carolina Card using VIP (good at dining, Starbucks, bookstore, library too) • some printers are free for Grad students (room 330) • only Lynette can add printer connections (for most computers) • 2 scanners available (301 and 319) – see Lynn/Kevin for details • large format plotters available in Gambrell Hall (www.cas.sc.edu/citc) • Software/Hardware • some software for Univ. computers can be downloaded from VIP • USC licenses some non-GIS software for personal student use through VIP • Lynn/Kevin can distribute most Esri (GIS) software free of charge • other GIS/RS software (ERDAS/ENVI/etc.) have distribution restrictions • Lynette should answer all other software availability questions (SAS,SPSS, etc.) • Lynette handles installation of software: in labs 005, 301 and on any instructor classroom machine • machines in labs & student offices are administered by either Lynette, Kevin, Lynn or Chris Emrich (HRVI Lab)

Support Outside Geography • College resources • Arts & Sciences Lab (CAS) – Gambrell Hall • DS account issues • General application support (especially Mac-related issues) • Lab with specialized device (plotters, digital cameras, GPS units, video-editing software, etc.) 2) CAS Research Computing Lab – SumwaltBldg • Questions regarding research-related servers (Sumwalt) • UTS (University Technology Services) resources • University UserID and Email issues • Software for purchase (VIP) • Computer purchase (some discounts) • Training courses (Blackboard, etc.) • Help with student computer issues
