5GHz Wireless Standards Coexistence Guidelines

This update discusses the progress made in developing coexistence guidelines for IEEE 802 wireless standards operating in the 5GHz unlicensed bands. It includes updates on the selected officers, discussion on critical definitions, and a proposal to preserve spectrum coexistence. Progress for the Week • Selected Officers • Bruce Kraemer (Intersil), Vice-chair • Garth Hillman (AMD), Secretary • Critical Definitions was the primary focus of this session • Work done for 802.15 (doc.#99114r0 802.15) served as the basis, but needs modifications and additions to address 802.11a / HIPERLAN/2 / MMAC issues. • List was not completed by the end of this session. Group members will use document 415r1, and provide final changes via email to the chair. • A subset of the group will attend (as an ad hoc group) the Joint Globalization Group meeting in Sophia Antipolis, France on November 22nd. Progress (cont’d) • Responded to PARs relating to the 5GHz unlicensed bands for Wireless HUMAN (802.16) and Wireless PAN (802.15) as requested by the P802.11 Working Group. • Received responses back indicating that both groups have modified the language of the PARs to include the coexistence requirements. • At the midweek plenary, the position written by the 5GSG group was affirmed as the position of IEEE P802.11(x-x-x). • Motion: Move to empower the continued work of the 5GSG (5GHz Globalization Study Group) through the close of the next 802 Plenary, in March of 2001 Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

Proposal to Preserve Spectrum Coexistence • The 5GSG believes that IEEE 802 should develop a set of coexistence and/or spectrum sharing guidelines to guarantee non-interference amongst its own wireless standards, currently 802.11/15 and 16. This should be done as soon as possible. • We fully endorse the work of the IEEE 802 Regulatory Ad Hoc Group in their efforts to achieve global spectrum harmonization, and will offer our help as required. We would also like to invite the members of that group to attend our joint 5GHz WLAN Globalization group meetings. Approved 21/0/1 Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

  5. Comment on the PARs • This group believes that the approval of new standards in the 5GHz unlicensed bands should be consistent with the guidelines. • Specifically, we have concerns about the compatibility and distinct identity of Wireless HUMAN (802.16.1b), WPAN Low Rate (802.15.4) and WPAN High Rate (802.15.3) to the extent that they will operate in the 5GHz unlicensed bands. • Without coexistence guidelines, the broad market acceptance of all of these standards is threatened.
