Qualities of a Supervisor • Knows the TI programme completely • Knows how to plan and implement TI • Knows how to monitor and evaluate TI • Is approachable by other staff and community members • Is willing to learn from the community • Has the ability to see the person beyond his/her own issues and problems
Benefits of Supervision • Ensures timely achievement of targets (for e.g. 100% condom usage) • Ensures regular availability of supplies like condoms, STI medicines, etc. • Identifies training needs among TI staff • Develops innovative practices for improving the uptake of services (removing barriers to accessing services) • Supports staff and community members
Responsibilities • To communicate and clarify major job responsibilities to ORWs, PEs and other staff • To set targets for the staff members • To monitor performance • To conduct training programmes for staff members • To develop a second line of leadership
Programme Manager’s Responsibilities as Supervisor The PM is responsible for the overall supervision of the programme. Some of the key elements are: • Programme - Weekly meetings to review TI performance, review of peer calendars, ORW diaries, regular field visits • Administration - Review of leave records, appraisals, weekly plans, etc. • Finance - Sample vouchers, budget versus expenditures, etc. • Reporting - Quality and timeliness, CMIS and SoEs
Supportive Supervision & Mentoring • The Supervisor should listen to staff and community • S/he should be able to empathize with others • S/he should provide continuous feedback to the TI staff • S/he should help each one achieve their targets • S/he should review staff performances periodically
