  2. What is Supervision? • The supervisor supervises the work of ORWs, PEs and other TI staff • S/he sets the targets for ORWs, PEs and other TI staff • The supervisor ensures that ORWs, PEs and other TI staff achieve targets, and provides them with the necessary support for doing so

Qualities of a Supervisor • Knows the TI programme completely • Knows how to plan and implement TI • Knows how to monitor and evaluate TI • Is approachable by other staff and community members • Is willing to learn from the community • Has the ability to see the person beyond his/her own issues and problems

  4. Benefits of Supervision • Ensures timely achievement of targets (for e.g. 100% condom usage) • Ensures regular availability of supplies like condoms, STI medicines, etc. • Identifies training needs among TI staff • Develops innovative practices for improving the uptake of services (removing barriers to accessing services) • Supports staff and community members

  5. Responsibilities • To communicate and clarify major job responsibilities to ORWs, PEs and other staff • To set targets for the staff members • To monitor performance • To conduct training programmes for staff members • To develop a second line of leadership

  6. Programme Manager’s Responsibilities as Supervisor The PM is responsible for the overall supervision of the programme. Some of the key elements are: • Programme - Weekly meetings to review TI performance, review of peer calendars, ORW diaries, regular field visits • Administration - Review of leave records, appraisals, weekly plans, etc. • Finance - Sample vouchers, budget versus expenditures, etc. • Reporting - Quality and timeliness, CMIS and SoEs

  7. Supportive Supervision & Mentoring • The Supervisor should listen to staff and community • S/he should be able to empathize with others • S/he should provide continuous feedback to the TI staff • S/he should help each one achieve their targets • S/he should review staff performances periodically

Performance Management • Components of Performance Management • Performance and development planning • Set the targets for the TI staff and conduct training programs for them as per the OG • Coaching and progress reviews • Provide them with continuous support and review their achievements against the target • Performance and development review • Conduct periodical review and provide feedback

  10. Conclusion For effective implementation of the programme, it is vital that the PM : • sets clear targets for all members of the TI staff • ensures that the staff is provided with necessary support to achieve the target • reviews periodically their performance and provides them feedback
