  5. What makes for a good story: • Unique story (or at least a “new take” on an older one) • Topical • Interesting characters who convey emotion and personality • One of our targeted theme areas

Where we get ideas • One hour shows • Producers submit outline and budget for a possible show for a specific network (at Producers.discovery.com) • Network decides if it wants to fund the show completely or partially • Criteria: appeal to target audience; unique idea; visually active; dramatic

Where we get ideas: • Newsmagazine shows • Show producers decide if idea is appropriate for the show (Allan Butler for Discoveries This Week in the U.S.; Laura Kobetz for Daily Planet in Canada) • 5 to 7 minute long stories • New invention, new technology, new discovery that is relevant and of interest to a wide audience

Suggestions for getting stories picked up • Team up with one or more independent TV production companies or producers (caveat: it takes a long time to get a TV show “sold”) • Have your media department shoot some B-roll in advance in a professional format (HDV, Beta SP, mini DV) • Create email list of reporters and media outlets and send them regular news releases • Discovery and other TV networks increasingly looking for “new media” short-form content (web sites, web channels)
