    3. Homework Write up the core practical

    4. Starter Activity View the mitosis video to prompt your memory!

    5. Mitosis A VERY QUICK REVIEW No note taking Mitosis is normal cell division in which the DNA replicates itself. Each daughter cell contains an exact copy of the original DNA. This is the process by which organisms grow and repair themselves.

    6. Produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells - clones. The DNA must firstly be duplicated before division may occur. This ensures both new cells get a full set of the genetic information. This process of Cell Division can be divided into 5 sub-topic areas, these are:

    7. 1.Interphase Often called the resting stage Synthesis of organelles and increasing in size. Chromosomes are not visible - DNA is in the form of Chromatin. DNA replication.

    8. 2. Prophase In early prophase microtubules form a spindle Chromosomes visible nucleolus disappears. In late prophase spindle fully formed chromosomes condense to form chromatids, which are now visible. nuclear membrane disintegrates.

    9. 3. Metaphase nuclear membrane disappears chromosomes move to the equator of the spindles. centromeres attach to the spindle fibres, chromatids separate and move to opposite poles.

    10. 4.Anaphase The chromatids are fully separated. They reach their respective poles at either end of the cell.

    11. 5.Telophase Nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes Cytoplasm constricts dividing cell into 2 new cells. Chromosomes become chromatin threads, which are no longer visible.

    12. Main Activities CORE PRACTICAL (wear goggles) Activity 3.9 Observing mitosis (Core) (A3.09L) (Practical) Write up guidance
