Just What is a Cover Letter? • Introductory document that provides details on your skills & experience • More detail on why you’re qualified for that particular position • Effective cover letters also explain reasons for your interest in the specific organization and identify your most relevant skills or experiences. • Relationship to Resume • Resume is historic document – what you have done • Cover letter looks forward – what you can do for the employer
General Tips • Always include a cover letter when applying • Tailor the letter to the specific position • Use the job description as a guide for what skills and experience to highlight • Keep the letter to one page • Submit letter as separate document • Submit as a PDF file (same as other documents) • Many times determines how closely resume is reviewed • Cover letter must focus on what you can do for the employer, not what the job/employer can do for you. • Looking for someone who can fill the position
