Last week, a catastrophic typhoon hit the Philippines, resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 10,000 lives, with the count continuing to rise. This disaster has raised questions about the differences between typhoons and hurricanes, both forms of tropical cyclones that differ by their geographic locations. Typhoons occur in the western Pacific while hurricanes are found in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific. As the world grapples with this event, we must also address the underlying challenges such as population growth and its impact on resources, disease, and pollution.

In general, both typhoons and hurricanes are tropical cyclones but differ in their locations. The difference between hurricane and typhoon is that tropical cyclones in the west Pacific are called Typhoons and those in the Atlantic and east Pacific Ocean are called Hurricanes. It's the longitude that matters.
