  3. OOD • CAPT’s representative on the bridge • Responsibilities are in the SORM + standind orders • The OOD is accountable for everything that happens on his watch • MUST keep the BIG PICTURE - delegate

  4. OOD Reports and Relationships • CO - safe navigation and general operation • XO - ships routine • Nav - sightings and navigation • TAO - OOD must follow the recommendations of the TAO unless it hazards the ship

  5. Good Characteristics of and OOD • Forehandedness • no emergency procedures • look ahead and be prepared • Gain experience • Leadership - train, lead by example • Knowledge • Observant

  6. Watch Preparation • Know the ship - characteristics, engineering • Watch organization and team • Know standing orders • Nav and tactical picture • Op orders, notices • POD • Keep the bridge dark

  7. Watch relief • OOD - on the hour • JOOD - 15 minutes prior • JOOW - 30 minutes prior • be on the bridge 15 minutes prior to relief • may delay or decline relief if necessary

  8. Watch • Formality • High standards of appearance • Professionalism • Self Confidence • REPEAT BACKS

  9. INPORT • CDO • eligible for command • OOD qualified • reports to the CO/XO, responsible for the command

  10. INPORT • OOD • on quarterdeck PO, chief, or JO • Inspection ready • Security • Ship’s routine • Procedures • Good civilian attire • RA vice inport emergency

  11. Colors • 5 mins prior to 8:00 place prep at the dip and sound the trumpet (unless ceremony going on) • at 8:00 close up prep and sound colors • when done haul down prep and sound trumpet.

  12. Arrival and Departure • Request permission to come aboard and ashore and SHOW ID • Bells • 4 bells - CAPT, or CDR/LCDR command • 6 bells - up to 2 star • 7 bells - 3 star • 8 bells - 4 star, president, sec nav • CAPT, COS, CAG, ADM get stingers
