  5. Homework • Quiz on the systems of the body, Prefixes and Suffixes tomorrow. • Know the basic jobs of each system. • Prefixes and Suffixes are the following: • Append- Cardi- Cran- • Dors- -logy Pariet- • Pelv Peri- Pleur- • -Stasis -tomy Meta-

  6. Chapter 1 • Anatomy- The study of the structure and shape of body parts. • Physiology- The study of the function of body parts.

  7. Robotic Surgery Physicians Video • Overview of how it works. • Take notes! Umich Surgery With Terms Prostate Surgery

  8. Robotics In Detail • If you have a weak stomach- you picked the wrong class. • What are the advantages? Disadvantages? Tumor Removal

  10. Body Portions • Axial Portion: Head, neck,&Trunk • 2 body cavities • Dorsal • Ventral • Appendicular Portion: Arms & Legs Planes of the body

  11. Thoracic and Abdominopelvic Membranes • Parietal Pleura: Wall rib. Lines the outer wall of the thoracic cavity • Visceral Pleura: Deep rib. Lines the lung tissue • Pleural Cavity: Rib. Fluid filled cavity between the two membranes. • Mediastinum: Separates the thoracic cavity into 2 compartments. Lung vs. Heart & Esophagus. Pg 16

  12. The membranes • Pericardial Membrane: Around heart. Very thick. Surrounds the heart. • Visceral Pericardium: Covers the surface of the heart. • Pericardial Cavity: Cavity between the two membranes. Has very little fluid in it.

  13. The Abdominal Membranes(Peritoneal Membranes) • Parietal Peritoneum: Wall around abdomen • Visceral Peritoneum: Deep around abdomen. Covers each organ. • Peritoneal Cavity: Fluid filled space between membranes.

  14. Abdominopelvic Regions

  15. Levels of Structure and Organization (Pg. 3) • AtomsCompoundsOrganellsCells • Tissues (Group of similar cells with a common function) • Organ (Structure composed of two or more tissues that perform a specific function) • Organ System (two or more organs working together for a common function) • Organism (The living body)

  16. Systems of the Body Pg. 4&5 • Integumentary System- External covering of the body (Skin and Nerves). • Jobs • Protects/Cushions • Synthesizes Vitamin D • Waterproofs • Excretes waste • Regulates temperature • Feels pressure, pain, and temperature

  17. Skeletal System • Internal Framework of the body. • Consists of bones, cartilages, ligaments and joints • Jobs • Framework for muscles enables movement • Protection (i.e. skull, ribs) • Makes blood (i.e. bone marrow) • Stores minerals

  18. Muscular System • Often attached to bone • Three types of muscles • Skeletal Muscle (voluntary movement) • Smooth Muscle (involuntary movement) • Cardiac Muscle (heart muscle) • Jobs • Movement of body and fluids • Produces heat • Maintains Posture

  19. Medical Robotics Image Guided Surgery Abhilash Pandya Careers Nervous System • Coordinating System of the Body • Comprising of The Brain, Spinal Cord, Nerves, and Sensory Receptors • Jobs • Responds to change in and outside of the body • Activates muscles and glands • Analyzes information and produces thought

  20. Endocrine/Exocrine System • System made up of glands (gland=an organ that secretes hormones) • Endocrine Glands- Secrete hormones through their plasma membrane • Exocrine Glands- Secrete hormones through ducts • Jobs • Regulate growth, reproduction, metabolism, etc. • Produce hormones • Help maintain homeostasis

  21. Cardiovascular System • System consisting of the heart and blood vessels. • Blood Vessels • Arteries (Carries blood AWAY from the heart) • Capillaries (Connects arteries and veins) • Veins (Carries blood TOWARDS the heart) • Jobs • Carry oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste • Heart pumps the blood

  22. Lymphatic System • System comprising of lymph nodes and lymph vessels • Lymph node-small organs that collect lymph • Lymph Vessels- tubes that collect excess fluid and bring it to the heart. • Jobs • Returns excess body fluids to the heart • Plays a central role in the immune system • Houses white blood cells (immune cells)

  23. Respiratory System • System comprised of the lungs and accessory organs. • Jobs • Take in oxygen for delivery to cells • Remove carbon dioxide waste • Allows speech Lungs & Lung Cancer

  24. Digestive System • System comprising of a tube and accessory organs that run from mouthanus. • Jobs • Breakdown food • Food absorption into blood • Absorbs water • Eliminates food waste Digest. Sys. Animation Duration

  25. Urinary System • Consisting of the kidneys, bladder, and connective tubing • Kidneys filter urine from blood • Bladder stores urine for elimination • Jobs • Removes nitrogenous waste • Maintaining body’s water and salt (electrolyte) balance • Regulating the pH balance of the blood
