  2. What is career development? • Wikipedia the lifelong psychological and behavioral processes as well as contextual influences shaping one’s career over the life span. Career development involves the person’s creation of a career pattern, decision-making style, integration of life roles, values expression, and life-role self concepts."

Career planning@high schools in USA • It’s a process of knowing yourself and how the society functions, and then build a bridge between these two, where you can realize your pursuit as well as contribute to the world. Purpose: • To improve students’ vocational awareness, explore their interests and help them plan and prepare for the future occupation. It’s widely acknowledged that students in USA should receive this kind of education as soon as possible, particularly in primary school.

Standards for careerplanning American School Counselor Association(ASCA) produced national standard, which attachs importance to career development equally as the development of individual personality. • Students get a good understanding of techniques for career options, and make informed decisions. • Students employ skills to achieve vocational success and satisfaction. • Students realize the correlation between individual personality, education&training, and working environment.

Extracurricularactivities: • Occupational consulting and evaluation program, to be know more about themselves, and apply the information and skills to their planning. • Visits to the workplace and experience certain position • Training workshop to make better use of the information offered for wise decisions.

Systematic program: • know their individual talents, characteristics and interests • Occupational information from all sources • High expectations and requirements from the science&technology -driven society • Get to know how to set small goals for future career pursuit. • Get to know the conventional and innovative career options and no gender-prejudiced policy. • Learning is a lifelong process.

  8. Career Resource Center@Universities • The Center provides services for students and alumni by assisting them to achieve career development/experiences/employment opportunities. The Resource Center offers numerous services • career counseling/workshops/advisement on future career options • help with resumes and portfolios, interviewing tactics, job searches and other potential leads for finding employment in the corporate, academic, or public sector.

  11. Causes for Lack of Career Planning • From students’ perspective • Too much pressure from their studies : double major etc. • Highly involved in extracurricular activities: clubs & associations • Practical Majors ( Management, Media Studies) Less Practical Majors ( Humanities)

  12. Causes for Lack of Career Planning B.From the perspective of the university • Not enough courses or information resources concerning career plans. • The university doesn’t provide enough opportunities for students to get in touch with specific jobs. ( Summer Internship = Group Travel?)

  13. Causes for Lack of Career Planning C. Family Influence & Social Environment 1. Many families provide abundant financial support 2. The society cares too much about education qualifications which urge students to stay in college time for longer which sometimes is notnecessary

  14. Solutions for Lack of Career Planning • From students’ perspective • Clear self-perception: strengths/weaknesses/etc. --Not follow the trend • Better time management: --Tackle with procrastination -- Selective with extracurricular activities 3. Take the initiative to seek help
