Achilles Tendonitis By: Brianne Carvalho Lyndsey Moore Lila Yoldi Sarah Yoldi
Mechanism The over-stretching or over-use of the Achilles Tendon causes Achilles Tendonitis
Signs and Symptoms • Chronic soreness • Pain with dorsiflexion • Pain with plantar flexion against resistance • Mild swelling
Immediate Treatments • RICE • Gradual, slow stretching of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscle. • Heel lifts
Follow-up Treatments • RICE • Massage Therapy • Ice Massage • Neoprene Sleeve • Heat/ice
Prevention • Proper conditioning and warm-up • Heel raises is a good warm-up
RICE • Rest: Keep weight off injury • Ice: Apply to injury for 20 minutes with an hour between treatments • Compression: Wrap an elastic wrap around the injured area, working toward the heart. (Ex: for ankle start at toes and work towards calf) • Elevation: Raise injury above heart
Massage Therapy • Compression Broadening:Using compression push against muscle fibers to lengthen or broaden • Compressive Effleurage: Stokes that glide over the skin without attempting to move the deep muscle group. Done with either palm or fingers
Ice Massage • Massage the injured area with a block of ice • Only for of ice therapy where ice is applied directly to the skin • Last 7-10 minutes for a 5-in area. • Should be performed 2-4 times a day
Neoprene Sleeve • Use during activity to increase compression and support • Also heats the injured area
Heat/ Ice • After activity apply ice for 7minutes then heat for 3 minutes for 3 cycles to circulate blood in the injured area.
Prevention • Almost all sport injuries can be avoided when proper warm-up and cool downs are used during and after practice
