  3. Isa. 5:20-21 • Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And prudent (clever) in their own sight! (Isa 5:20-21)

  4. The Word Woe • Is used about 125 times in the Bible. • 1. From Numbers 21:29 to Rev. 12:12 • 2. So many subjects are introduced • By this expression of a ‘curse’. • 3. Isaiah has a number of these woes • Listed:

In this chapter alone,Isa. 5:1ff • Isa.5 [8] Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth![11] Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!

  6. 18] Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:[20] Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

  7. [21] Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent (clever) in their own sight![22] Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

  8. Notice vs. 20,21 • To those who call evil good • To those who call good evil • To those who substitute darkness for light • To those who substitute light for darkness • To those who substitute bitter for sweet • To those who substitute sweet for bitter

  9. And • Woe to them that are wise in their own eyes • And woe to them that are prudent (clever) in their • Own sight.

  10. What is Right? And What is wrong? • What is good and what is evil?? • What is light and what is darkness? • God wants us to know, and then to do • What is right!. • Remember Al Burns sermon: • Rom. 11:22 ?

  11. Heb. 5:13-14 • 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. • 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

  13. Romans 12:1-2 • I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

  14. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  15. What is Right? • What is God’s will? • Are we walking to please God (Heb. 11:6) • Or just walking in our own ways.? • Isa. 55:8,9; Jerm. 10:23; Prov. 14:12 • Can we hear God: WOE…stop, listen, • Check things out…

  16. Today:Changing What God Says • We have religious leaders and politicans who openly and aggressively, reject the moral standards of Scriptures. Some do this to justify their • Own lifestyle. • Our times reminds us of the prophets in Israel and Judah, when lonely voices of the prophets cried out against their wickedness but the people turned a deaf • Ear to what they were told.

  17. What the prophets said was strange to the people and appeared to them as fanatics. • The people were happy and satisfied, fulfilling any and every lusts of their hearts, while ignoring the warnings sounded by • The prophets. • Is America that way today? Church?

  18. God has given us the answers if only we would listen!!

  19. Ps 119:9-11-How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. 10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!  11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. • Ps 119:68 – You are good, and do good; Teach me Your statutes

  20. Ps 119:104 – Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. • Ps 119:114 – You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word. • Ps 119:142 -  Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.

  32. God’s Definitions • Abortion • “Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers.” {Romans 1:29}

God’s Definitions • Affair • “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness.” {Galatians 5:19} • “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites.” {1 Corinthians 6:9}

  44. How God looks at Sin! • People are putting a more attractive face on sin’s ugly face. • “Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21,22) • “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” {Romans 6:23}

  45. Call Evil Good, and good evil • People are putting a more attractive face on sin’s ugly face. Who? America! • “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!” {Isaiah 5:20,21}
