Today’s Goal: Learn about setting and evaluating how important setting is in a novel. Outcomes: Define the term “setting” as it is used in literature. Evaluate whether the setting is significant (important) in the plot of Hatchet. Compare and contrast the setting for Brian’s normal life growing up (city setting) with his life as it’s portrayed in Hatchet (wilderness setting). Discuss Hatchet Chapters 11 – 12 by citing your observations, questions, and opinions.
Starter #1: One of the first things we learn about in any story is the setting. In literature, what do we mean by the term “setting”? Setting is where the story takes place. Setting also includes the time in which the story takes place. What is the setting for Hatchet? The Canadian wilderness, northwest of upstate New York During the summer, when Brian is 13 years old
Starter #2: How important is the setting? In Hatchet, how important is the setting? (Prove or support your answer.) Today’s activity will ask you to compare Brian’s life as a city kid with his life in the wilderness as it’s portrayed in Hatchet. What type of graphic organizer (chart) is used most often for comparison and contrast of two things? A Venn Diagram But for some reason, we are NOT given a Venn diagram to use today. We are given only a simple “T” Chart with these headings: City Setting Wilderness Setting Why are we using a “T Chart” instead of a “Venn Diagram”? The two settings are so vastly different that we are going to compare in terms of their contrast or differences.
Starter #3: Take everything off from your desk except for pen (with dark colored ink) and a sheet of notebook paper. Create a heading as follows: Your Name (first & last name) Class: Lit 6 - ___ Date: Fri., Aug. 30, 2013 Assignment: Quiz, Hatchet, Ch 11 – 12 Number your paper from 1 to 14 (one number on each line). You will be given a quiz handout, but you are NOT to write on that quiz. Put all your answers on the sheet of notebook paper. Please use CAPITAL letters to indicate your answer.
Starter #4: Let’s see how well you did on this quiz. Please take out a red pen. . . . When I hand you a quiz to grade, please write at the bottom of the page: G.B. and your name (first & last name)
