  1. Composite Filament Winding Machine: P09226 Christofer Brayton Shijo George Alex Sandy Tiago Santos Daniel Weimann Dr. Alan Nye Dr. David Orlicki Electrical Engineer Project Manager Chief Engineer Mechanical Engineer Mechanical Engineer Faculty Advisor Faculty Consultant • Sponsored by RIT Mechanical Engineering Department

  2. Project Description Develop a machine that produces composite tubing Market: RIT ME Department Future Market(s): SAE Racing teams, Aero Teams Key high level customer needs / engineering specs: • Robust • Quality Control • Ease of use • Simple but effective machine that produces limited products • Minimize raw materials (resin, fiber) • Maintain fiber tension throughout process • Fiber volume fraction > 50% • Operation procedure simple • Easily disassembled for cleanup

  3. System Architecture

  4. Design Summary

  5. Design Summary

  6. System Testing Impregnation Quality Test Maximum and Minimum Fiber Orientation Angles 85° 60° 55° Up to Nm = 60 RPM Nm = 10 RPM Slip

  7. System Testing Profile Testing Θ=75° Nm=40 RPM • “Dogbone” serves as filament bandwidth • Insufficient bandwidth leads to gaps in part • Further testing required to determine relationship between dimensions and bandwidth 85° 60° 55°

  8. Future Work • Tensioning System • Electronic Control • Multi-fiber • Advanced Controls • Different Cross-Sections • Active Feedback • Multiple/Complex Fiber Orientations • Heated Resin Bath • Temperature Control

  9. Project Evaluation • Success: • Under Budget: $1,002.33 (of $2,000.00) • Accurate/Precise Winding Profiles • Future Plans (Tension System, Documentation) • Setbacks: • Wet wind test run • Unable to test part (not produced yet)
