When administering medicine to children, follow strict safety measures. Two staff members should verify the medicine order, confirm the child’s last dose, and check the medication label against the permission form. The correct dose must be measured using appropriate tools like measuring cups or syringes, without elevating them to eye level. Never mix medicine with food or drinks, and always supervise children during medication intake. Record the date and time, and ensure proper documentation in the child's personal file to keep track of administered doses.

Measuring the dose • When you are measuring a dose of medication special precautions should be taken to prevent errors. When measuring use a correctly marked measuring cup, syringe or dropper. Do not measure by teaspoon as it is not accurate. The measuring cup should remain on a level surface when pouring and measuring. Do not lift to eye level to measure as it will not be an accurate measurement. Once two staff members have checked the dose the medicine can be given
Guidelines for safe medicine administration • Never mix the medicine in food or drink! • Supervise all children when taking medicine – even if they are older. • If a child vomits or spits the medicine, do not repeat a dose of medicine without consulting senior staff/child’s parents/doctor. • Administer medication out of sight of other children.
