  3. A Peer Alcohol Project? Research indicates that young people are more willing to learn key messages from their peers, particularly around topics such as alcohol misuse, rather than their class teachers

  4. How the ‘Bottle It’ project was developed Meeting with head teachers/PSHE Co-ordinators Assemblies Focus Group Work Training Sessions Delivery of project TIE for Yr 6 feeder schools Celebratory Event Staff Training

  5. Focus group Work Information about young people’s views and opinions on the use of alcohol among young people and the wider community Information about young people’s views and opinions on prevention and education of alcohol misuse

  6. Training the Peer Educators To understand the purpose of their role To inform their own knowledge, skills and challenge their attitudes/behaviour around alcohol

  7. Delivery of theLessons • 4 x 1 hour lessons • Peer Educators work in pairs to deliver lessons to Year 8 forms

Evaluation and Findings of ‘Bottle It’ Year 8 pupils Prior to the lessons 43% of the Yr 8 pupils claimed they had excellent/very good knowledge of the short and long term effects of alcohol misuse in comparison to 60% after the lessons Peer educators Prior to the training 38% had a very good/excellent understanding of safer drinking of alcohol in comparison to 59% after the training Case study of year 10 pupil

Feedback from the Delivery of the project Year 8 pupils “You can ask them questions you may not ask the teacher” “they understand our situations more than teachers and they talk more like us” “I wouldn’t say I will never drink alcohol but I will know how much I can drink and be safe” “It’s been fun and the lessons have been enjoyable with really good activities” “It has made me think about all the things that could happen to me if I were to get ‘mashed’ “I realise what the effect of somebody drinking can have on friends and family” “it’s made me think about how I get home from parties and how to keep safe” “remember to look out for your friends” “I have learnt how to say no to a drink of alcohol”

Feedback from the Delivery of the project PSHE Co-ordinators “it’s been great for the educators- they have grown in self esteem and confidence” “it’s really made the year 10’s grow up and become more responsible” “The year 10’s have had opportunity to learn more about alcohol misuse. All the prep work involved with the lessons has meant they have learnt quite a lot about alcohol misuse” It’s been really successful – the year 8’s have really enjoyed being taught by the year 10’s and I think they have taken the key messages away from the lessons much better than if delivered by their class teachers” “It has been a fantastic project and will definitely look at implementing the project next year. I can see how this could be used to deliver other topics too which I am going to explore”
