Personalisation through Choice S2 Pupils

This course offers a recap of S1 and S2 subjects, allowing students to explore their strengths, interests, and career aspirations. It focuses on breadth and depth across the curriculum, preparing students for National courses. It also emphasizes logical and appropriate subject choices, with English and Mathematics being compulsory. Students will have the opportunity to plan their pathways for future studies.

Recap on S1 and S2 • Common course in S1 and S2, with everyone taking the same subjects • Setting in English and Maths in S1 & S2 • Breadth & Depth across the curriculum in preparation for National courses • By now, clearer idea of subjects you are best at, subjects you like and (for some) subjects you need for career • Pathways Planning

Basic principles underpinning personalisation and choice • All pupils can progress in S3 then S4 • From 15 or so subjects in S2 to 9 subjects in S3 • Keeping it broad - must do English and Mathematics, then choosing 6 subjects from curricular areas and 1 from a ‘free choice’ plus PE, RME and PSE • Complete your studies using CFE outcomes and experiences at Level 3 and Level 4 in S3 and preparation for N5/4 courses • S2/3 report and S3 profile will allow you to plan • Enabling presentation in many SQA subjects in S4

Making logical and appropriate choices • English and Mathematics compulsory • Modern Language is recommended for most by Scottish Executive, by HMIe and by us • Balance of subjects across curriculum areas – Social Subjects, Language, Science, Expressive Arts, Health & Wellbeing, Technologies • Free Choice column - constraints

Making logical and appropriate choices(2) • Do not choose subjects because your best friend is doing it , because you like the teacher, or because you have heard that it is an “easy” subject! • What are my best subjects just now? • Are there any new subjects I would like to try? • What subjects do I enjoy? • What subjects do I need for a career? • Keep options open!

  6. Free Choice column • To keep balance across curriculum areas for Broad General Education • Free Choice allows for you to specialise in areas you feel you are good are or want to progress with in S4/5/6 Your courses in S4 will come from the subjects you choose in S3.

  7. Demands of S3 and S4 • Increased quality and quantity of work expected • Regular homework • Regular topic tests requiring revision • S4 preliminary examinations for National 5 • SQA coursework to be submitted throughout S4 • National SQA qualifications in S4

  8. Thinking beyond S4 • During S4 start refocusing on possible career – Careers interview, Guidance staff, websites THINK ABOUT WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU! • Subjects choice pathways – learner journey • College courses and university courses • Job/Apprenticeship • Stay on for S5

  9. The Mechanics of Choice • The choice form – deadline Friday 9 February THEN • Dealing with choice forms and enquiries - speak to your Head of House THEN • Timetabling issues – staffing, class numbers, senior school

S4 - moving to qualifications • English and Literacy • Mathematics and Numeracy • PSE/PE • 4 choices continuing from S3 • Majority presented at National 4 or National 5 • National 4 – internal generation of evidence, external moderation • National 5 – combination of coursework plus external assessment (this varies across subjects – there is always an examination)

What happens next • Forms and booklet will be available week beginning 29 January. • Completed choice form is returned by Friday 9 February • Each pupil’s choice entered in to computer file based on timetable columns • Best fit achieved – class sets will be close to maximum and we cannot guarantee all requests
