  3. Scott PilgrimBryan Lee O’Malley SUMMARY: Scott Pilgrim is a typical bum. At 23 years old he is living with a gay friend, and in a band. He begins having somewhat psychic dreams about a girl on roller blades. He finally encounters her in real life and the fun begins. In order to be with the girl of his dreams, he must defeat all of her evil ex’s. This story is told in the form of a graphic novel. Picture make Scotts journey to love pop out to the reader and make us feel as if we are actually a part of the situations Scott Is placed into. THEMES: Love, teamwork, friendship, acceptance CONNECTIONS: Although this book is based on a romance, many aspect of the book can relate to issues such as racial and sexual acceptance, we see all types of races represented in the graphic novel. Also issues such as what is important and appropriate in a relationship. AGE: grades 11+12 SONG: Embrace the Martian, Kid Cudi

What My Mother Doesn’t KnowSonya Sones SUMMARY:This beautiful book written in verse is an honest and heartbreaking story of a girl being true to herself, trusting her friends, and having the strength to love what makes her heart happy. This story really captures the nervousness of dating a guy, the way friends can get jealous, the sorrow at realizing that you just don't like him anymore and moving on, and finding the strength to love what makes your heart happy. THEMES: Love, Trust, Respect, Religion, Friendship CONNECTIONS: This book is an excellent read for girls who are having a hard time talking about their thoughts on relationships. Sometimes it is easier when you know someone else has been through it. It is also a good insight into what girls are thinking for a guy to read!   5. CatfishHenry Joost SUMMARY: Catfish is a true documentary based upon a dangerous online relationship. Nev is a photographer who comes into contact with a child prodigy that paints his work. He becomes face book friends with this girl, and discovers she has a very attractive older sister. As the documentary develops we see the sexual tension and a relationship builds between these two characters. After about a year, enough is enough, Nev just has to meet this woman despite this distance… THEMES: Online Danger, Deception, Friendship CONNECTIONS: Connects to anyone who has ever made a random online friend. It can also connect to anyone who has been lied to in a relationship. On a more positive note, it shows the strength of a true friendship. Gamer Mark Neveldine SUMMARY: Cable is a man who has committed a crime, for his punishment, he is sent into the virtual world, to be played be a teenage boy named Simon in a Call of Duty like game, only people actually die when their controller loses. Cable is on a winning streak, and finds a way to get into contact with Simon. Together, they are able to escape the system and join the rebels in attempt to better society and reunite Cable with his family. THEMES: Family ties, Crimes, Politics, Romance, Loyalty CONNECTIONS: Any one who liked “The Hunger Games” will love this.   7. The PactJodi Picoult SUMMARY: Chris and Emily grew up together, fated to be lovers before they were even old enough to talk. They were best friends from the moment they met. They are closer than siblings, able to feel each other's pain in a way no one else can possibly understand. This friendship eventually leads to love. One night, all of that changes, however, when their parents receive a life shattering phone call. One lover is dead. The other is charged with her murder. THEMES: Suicide, Life, Dangerous Romance, Family, Law CONNECTIONS: Anyone suffering from depression. Also anyone who cares about someone who is struggling and does not know what to do about it.   8. Kiss Crush CollideChristina Meredith SUMMARY: A kiss is what Leah did at a country club party with a strange and intriguing boy. An illegal crush develops for the guy from the country club, the guy who is not her boyfriend, but the guy who changes up her life. Colliding into a climax when Leah realizes that everything she always wanted—having cool friends, being class valedictorian and homecoming queen, following perfect sisters footsteps, and having parents approval—conflicts with everything she really does want. THEMES: Family Dynamic, Sisterhood, Forbidden Romance CONNECTIONS: A good read for young adults who are struggling to be themselves and make their own path in life. AGE: Middle and High School SONG: Animals, Nickleback

Thirteen Reasons WhyJay Asher SUMMARY: The story opens with Clay Jensen, the good guy finding a package on his porch containing seven cassette tapes, with each side numbered separately from one to thirteen. The tapes, created by Hannah, the girl who two weeks prior had committed suicide, are instructed to be passed on, in order, to a list of individuals whose names all appear on the recordings .Clay decides to listen, he had always had a crush on Hannah, even getting a job near her to be close to her. In the tapes, Hannah promises that teach recording will explain why she took her life, and she explains that each of those who receive a tape contributed in some way to her suicide. THEMES: Suicide, Growing up, Betrayal, Love CONNECTIONS: Students suffering with depression and fitting in. Anyone who is dealing with a suicide that has happened to a friend. An impacting read for boys and girls alike. AGE: High School Seniors SONG: Heartless, Kanye West

  10. MarkedP.C and Kristen Cast SUMMARY: 16-year-old Zoey Redbird gets “Marked” by a vampyre tracker and begins to undergo a very odd Vampyre change, and starts to turn into an actual vampyre. She has to leave her family and friends in Tulsa and move into the House of Night, a school for recently marked vampyres like her. It’s at school that Zoey meets new friends, finds romance (many), and starts to come to terms with the fact that her life will be different now and begins to realize she also has some sweet new abilities that not all fledgings have. THEMES: Change, supernatural romance, acceptance, individuality, Friendship CONNECTIONS: An easy book to relate to for anyone going through a major life change. Also touches upon issues with divorce and step parents. AGE: Middle and High School SONG: What is Light, Where is Laughter, Twin Atlantic

  11. The Hunger GamesSuzanne Collins SUMMARY: Katnis Everdeen is a 16 year old girl who lives in district 12. She is the brave older sister of Prim and caretaker of her own mother. When she volunteers to take Prim’s place in the reaping, an event the capitol hold every year, in which tributes from each district fight to the death, the district's start to stir in what could be a possible uprising. Not only is Katnis stuck in a life or death situation, but she is also placed in between an impossible love triangle. THEMES: Determination, Love, Family, Friendship, Politics CONNECTIONS: Easy for girls and boys to read because it has the drama for girls and action for boys. Movie connection to GAMER. AGE: Middle and High School SONG: Collapse, Eminem
