  1. What happened to Emmet Till? By Carmeno Innocent

  2. His early life • Emmet Till was born on July 25, 1941 in Chicago Illinois • Because his dad was at war his mom was forced to work long hours while Emmet was cleaning the house. • His mom said, ‘Emmett had all the house responsibility. I mean everything was really on his shoulders…He told me if I would work, and make the money, he would take care of everything else. He cleaned, and he cooked quite a bit’(“Emmett Till Bio”).

  3. How he ended up in Mississippi.. • In August 1955 till's great uncle Moses Wright came from Mississippi to visit family in Chicago • Before Moses left Emmet begged his mom if he could go with him. She first said no but eventually she gave up Moses Wright • He arrived on August 24, 1955 at age 14 • After a hard days work on the field, he went to a grocery store with a group of teens and bought some bubble gum(“Emmett Till Bio”).

  4. Emmet's demise • The teens with him reported he either whistled at, flirted with, or touched the hand of Carolyn Bryant… The white wife of the store owner. • 2:30 in the morning on August 28, 1955. Roy Bryant, Carolyn's husband, and his half brother J.W. Milam kidnapped Till from Moses Wright’s home. • They tied him up with Barbed wires, beat him with a gun, gouged out his eye, and blew his brains out…They then threw him into the Tallahatchie River, To get rid of evidence (“Emmett Till Bio”).

  5. A.D. • His body was soon found and sent to his mom in Chicago. • His face was so messed up Moses was only able to tell it was him because of his signet ring he brought. • His mom was devastated. She said, “let the world see what has happened, because there is no way I could describe this. And I needed somebody to help me tell what it was like”. • 2 of the men were arrested, after confessing they were not found guilty("Emmett Till bio").

  6. Reflection • What Interested me most was a similar event happened in July 17, 2001 a black 17 year old, Raynard Johnson was hung on a tree for whistling at a white woman (“Emmett Till”). • The Jim Crow Laws segregated blacks and whites leaving black with the hand-me-downs . This allowed whites to judge blacks in a derogatory way. This allowed whites to speculate. • I organized it in Chronological order and put pictures so people can understand the themes better.
