  1. Asbestosis is an illness which occurs in the lungs due to heavy exposure to asbestos. Although the use of asbestos in a building was outlawed in 1999, there is still some risk to those who worked with asbestos before it was banned and those who come across asbestos in the field of work today. The disease progresses slowly and there are no known remedies to stop or slow down its progression. As the progress of the disease is slow, it may take 10-20 years from the first time the individual was exposed to asbestos before asbestosis is discovered. Asbestosis means that lung tissue has been scarred due to exposure to asbestos. Symptoms of asbestosis include coughing and shortness of breath. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which affects the membrane in the lungs, heart and guts.
