  1. Mobility and career development of professionals and managers Seminar Brussels, 4 – 5 October 2007

  2. Background • In this project we want to treat another difficult subject: convincing P & MS of the advantages of working in another country. The decision to work in another country depends on a number of conditions, and many of those are related to the career development, the motivation and the psychological motivation of the individual professional or manager as well as the company culture. Will mobility further one’s career? Will it have positive impacts? These are crucial questions for any individual.

  3. What’s different about this project? • It goes beyond mobilnet – additional topics and partners • UNIZO as partners • Three topics in connection with career development: job mobility, cross-border mobility and international mobility

  4. Background • We want to study and discuss these questions, which will help professional and managerial staff and their trade unions to make better decisions. We also want to look at the attitudes and problems of small and medium sized enterprises together with the partner UNIZO, the Flemish representative of SMEs which has the EuresChannel Coordination. We want to achieve that by a. researching the impact of mobility on the careers of P & MS in different regions of Europe; b. to concentrate one case study on the region Flanders / France / Netherlands / England, c. discussing the impact of mobility on the career development of professionals and managers as well as the case study at a trans-national seminar and c. publishing the results in three languages.

  5. Objectives • To compare and discuss the impact of mobility on the career development of professionals and managers • To research the impact, especially the drivers and barriers from the viewpoint of professional and managerial staff in companies, of mobility on the career development of professionals and managers • To discuss • motivational factors & added value for mobility with a career perspective • fears concerning mobility and its impact on career development • HR perspectives • mobility barriers based on psychology, personal attitudes and company culture • whether there are cultural differences when it comes to mobility and its impact on careers • mobility at different stages of a manager’s career • the attitudes of SMEs to the mobility of professionals and managers

  6. Objectives • To develop recommendations for professionals and managers, their trade unions as well as SMEs concerning mobility • To develop a case study in the Flanders / France region to learn more about attitudes of P & MS but also employers in small and medium sized enterprises in other European regions, sometimes faced with serious bottlenecks on the labour market for high skilled professional jobs. • To compare the results with other European regions at the seminar

  7. Schedule • Start of project: 15 December 2006 • Preparatory phase: 15 December 2006 – 30 January 2007 • Preparatory meeting: 15 January 2007 • Research: 1 February – 30 September 2007 • Preparation of seminar: 1 February - 30 September 2007 • Seminar ‘The impact of mobility on the career development of P & MS’: 1 - 2 October 06 • Wrap-up and dissemination: 3 October – 15 December 2007 (to be extended to 15 March 08)

  8. Results • Research on the impact of mobility on the career development of P & MS, with a special emphasis on the drivers and barriers from the viewpoint of professional and managerial staff in companies. • A case study focusing on the attitudes of P & MS and SMEs in the Flanders / France / England / Netherlands region • Seminar on the research results and the case study, which will provide a comparison of different European experiences, and a discussion of possible solutions participants’ experiences and relevant case studies to further analyse the questions • A report comprising the research, case study and seminar results, which will be published in English, French and Dutch

  9. Research • During 2006, the ‘European year of worker’s mobility’, the Dublin Foundation has commissioned a research team to analyse the special Eurobarometer on Mobility. This research will result in one descriptive report on mobility in Europe, and five analytical research papers on the drivers and barriers to mobility and the economic and social effects of mobility in Europe. EUROCADRES will ask a researcher or an institute to revise the main finding of this research from the viewpoint of professional and managerial staff in companies. The mobility research revision will also imply the (re)calculation of the main indicators for this specific occupational category. This will assure a decent empirical introductory contribution on the closing seminar on ‘the impact of mobility on the career development of P&MS’. • A 2nd part will look at a specific region, namely the France / Flanders region, where also the Netherlands and England have an influence, and analyse the attitudes, drivers and barriers of both employers and P & MS. This will be compared to the findings of the first part of the study as well as to other European experiences.
