Danger Ahead:Disaster Planning for the CCCU Chris Martin, Northwest University Gary Holeman, LeTourneau University Paul Dupree, Asbury College
Why are we here? • The growing complexity of our technology provisions demand that we prepare for “worst” case scenarios • How do we leverage our CCCU membership and the relationships we have formed with each other for positive institutional and personal and spiritual benefit?
Recent Campus Examples • LeTourneau and Hurricane Rita Fall 2005 • Asbury College Sprint network cut-over Spring 2006
Disaster Preparedness and Recovery – Hurricane Rita • Communication with Constituents • Northwest University and Asbury College • Consultation – “Sanity Check” • Off-site web hosting • Information hotline hosting • Course Management System hosting • Redirection of phone systems • Email to parents • Posting regular updates
Disaster Preparedness – Ongoing Services • Service Failover (web, course management systems, etc.) • Redirecting mail, network and phone traffic
“Well it won’t happen to me…” • Four Category 3 hurricanes in the last year with at least four more projected for 2006. • Earthquakes, Fire, Tornado, Flood, Power failure we are all vulnerable to a catastrophe
How can we help each other? • Individual campus plans • Up to date? • Models to follow: How do we prepare and share? • Regional Plans • Regional Peer support • Vendor supplied options? • National Plans • CCCU “Foundations Program” (need a name)
SafetyNet Program • Peer-oriented, CCCU partners • Cross-regional partners form the foundation for your disaster recovery plan • South/West • East/Midwest etc….
Possible SafetyNet Services • DNS/Mail MX backups • Web failover hosting • Telephone information/voicemail • Tape exchange • Off-site storage in our fire-proof environments • Learning Management System hosting • Moodle/Sakai implementations
Future Ideas • Forming regional “crisis” response teams • Bringing in needed gear, fuel, manpower • Creating a consortium and purchasing two or three SAN systems with dedicated space and high-speed network for “landing” backups to remote • And…??????
Interested? What’s the next step? • Discussion and approval by home institutional administration • Ensure we meet auditing, state, denominational requirements • Creation of charter, peer agreement paperwork • Website/Email list?
