  11. 10 y/o boy of Italian descent Diagnosis : Beta thalassemia major Homozygous beta0 thalassemia Comment : beta0 = beta gene producing no beta chains no beta chains and hence no Hb A. untreated he has about 95% Hb F (remainder being Hb A2) Treatment : Transfusion to maintain hemoglobin level; Chelation therapy to remove excess iron present due to hemolysis and transfusions. Bone marrow transplantation is treatment of choice
