  1. WHAT IS SECTARIANISM? • This is when a person becomes a target of verbal and physical abuse because they are from a particular background. It is a hatred of people because they belong to a different religious group.

  2. Recap • Catholics and Protestants see themselves as 2 different groups • Lack of common identity prevents understanding and co-operation between the 2 groups. • Divided Loyalties • Loyalty to different countries makes the Catholics and Protestants intolerant of each other

  3. Sectarianism is not just in Northern Ireland. It is present throughout the world. • There is hatred and tension, and communities become divided into “us” and “them”. • When people refuse to mix and fail to communicate they cannot get to know each other. Instead they become fearful and suspicious. This often results in tension and violence.
