  2. Birthplace of Christianity • Judea – 63 BCE under Roman control • Jews rebel regularly • 37 BCE – King Herod, works with Romans - rebuilds temple - sons fight after death - people await Messiah

  3. Birth of Jesus • Probably around 6 CE • Virgin birth by Mary – notified by angel • Emperor Augustus calls a census = taxes  • Joseph/Mary to Bethlehem his hometown • Inns full – stay in stable • Jesus raised in Nazareth • Carpentry/Jewish law studies • 30 baptized in Jordan by John the Baptist (cousin)

Jesus’ Teaching • Disciples – 12 followers – ordinary guys • Traditional Jewish beliefs – love, mercy • Kingdom of God for everyone who follows God’s will – not earthly treasures • Parables – stories to explain moral/religious ideas • Feared by some – don’t like ideas/afraid of upsetting Romans

  5. Crucifixion and Resurrection • Age 32 – welcomed to Jerusalem for Passover • Throws businessman out of temple • Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus at Garden of Gasemene • Jesus – guilty by Jewish leaders • Pontius Pilate – must give permission for execution – reluctantly agrees to Crucifixion

Missionary Work of Paul • Saul of Tarsus (Turkey) = Paul (Greek) • Jewish Roman citizen – persecutes Christians • Traveling – blinded and hears Jesus – converts • Mission = convert non-Jews • Focus = Jesus as Son of God – all are God’s children • Letters = throughout Greek speaking world – even from Roman jail

  11. Persecution and Triumph • 60s CE – Romans persecute severely • Why? Refuse to accept emperor as god, won’t serve in army, won’t worship Roman gods, lots of them! (300 CE – 5 mill) • Result? Crucifixion, thrown to wild animals • Does it work? No – people like the idea of a better life after death! • 313 CE – Constantine – freedom to practice • 392 CE – Theodosius I bans pagan worship • 395 CE – Christianity official religion of Rome
