  1. 11.3 Origins of Christianity

  2. The Spread of Christianity • The Early Church • Jesus chose Peter from his apostles to lead his new church • He and other Christians spread the faith to Europe, Asia, and North Africa

  3. The Spread of Christianity • Christians and Jews • Most early Christians considered themselves Jews • Followed Mosaic law and customs • Differences between traditional Jews and Christians began to grow larger • The Good News was also being told to non-Jews • Jewish zealots rebelled against Rome • Rome retaliated by destroying the Temple • After a later rebellion the Romans forced all of the Jews to leave Jerusalem • Settled all over the empire

  4. The Spread of Christianity • The Apostle Paul • A Jewish zealot who persecuted Christians • Converted to Christianity • After 3 years in the desert and 10 more years Paul became an Apostle • He started churches in Greece and preached the Good News • Also spread the belief that non-Jews could believe in Christ with out following all of the Jewish practices • This leads to Christianity being a separate faith from Judaism

  5. The Spread of Christianity • Reasons for Growth • PaxRomana • Roads • Common language (Greek) • St. Paul’s journeys • The message itself • The poor, women, slaves, etc. are all equal in God’s eyes
