Gate is basically the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering exam that is valid all over India and is conducted by Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology jointly on behalf of National Coordination Board, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development, and Government of India. It is a compulsory requirement to fulfill when applying for Masters or Doctoral programs in engineering, architecture or technology. It is conducted only once a year and is a computer based test with duration of 3 hours.
