Current Eye Care Scenario in North India • No major private institutes in eye care • Over last decade eye care chains have definitely come up • However they are hospital chains • No institute has come up in last 25 years which offers capacity building initiatives for eye care human resource development • All this points to the need for good eye care institutes in North India

Group Practice Findings • Practices with a strong information culture favor electronic data systems and formal programs that provide comparative or evidence-based data to enhance their clinical practices • Those with a quality-centered culture appear to prefer patient satisfaction surveys to assess the quality of their care • Practices that are more business-oriented rely on bureaucratic strategies such as benchmarking and physician profiling • Practices with a highly collegial culture appear to rely on informal peer review mechanisms to assure quality rather than any of the structural programs
Necessary Character Traits For Solos • An entrepreneurial mindset • Willingness to have the buck stop with you – both financially and with treatment decisions. • Independent spirit and willingness to be innovative • Willingness to work whenever, wherever, however • Willingness to be the only doctor on your block getting to the hospital in the middle of a heavy rain • Willingness to market your practice
Solo Practice Advantages Disadvantages • Independence: Freedom to operate every facet of the business as you see appropriate. • Hours: Statistics show that solos work less during the workweek than physicians in group practice do. But solos tend to work more on the weekends than do group practice physicians. • Money. Whatever you make is yours. • Doing everything: You may have to do things you have never done before, as well as tasks you may not be good at doing and also tasks that the office staff ordinarily does at a larger practice. • Time: Long weekend and evening hours translate into less time for your spouse and children, as well as less vacation time, at least initially. • Lack of coverage for emergencies and during illness • Initial cost of set-up. • Reimbursement rates for solos are not always as high as they are for members of a group.
Centre of Excellence • A center of excellence refers to a team, a shared facility or an entity that provides leadership, evangelization, best practices, research, support and/or training for a focus area • It may also be known as a competency center or a capability center • Such a center may bring together faculty members from different disciplines and provide shared facilities
