In 2007, more than US$500 million were invested in H&S and environment-related projects. • Group operations comply with local and legal regulatory requirements. • Steel is the material of choice for environmental protection: it outperforms other materials as it is readily recycled. In some applications, 90% of steel used is recycled. • Figures from APEAL (Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) show that 66% of steel packaging is recycled in Europe. • Globally, recycling steel brings about 600 million tonnes of CO2 savings annually. • Environmental excellence, incorporated into all processing activities, is to be promoted by the Environmental Policy. • The Group is leading the EU-sponsored ‘Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking’ (ULCOS) project which aims to develop breakthrough technology that will drastically reduce the industry’s emissions of greenhouse gases.
