Why a CICES-Be? • Need for harmonized system and local-adapted system for Belgium: • BEES output • ESS mapping in Wallonia and Flanders (NARA) • Start big research projects • Checklists requested by users (egVLM) • Reporting to Europe • Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES)

Proces of CICES-Be • Consultation with 17 Flemish and Walloon experts: Francis Turkelboom (INBO), Perrine Raquez (FUNDP), Marc Dufrene (DEMNA), Ilse Simoens (INBO), Leander Raes (UG), Maarten Stevens (INBO), Sander Jacobs (INBO/UA), Corentin Fontaine (FUNDP), Rik De Vreese (VUB), Dirk Vrebos (UA), Katrien van der Biest (UA), Jan Staes (UA), Marijke Thoonen (INBO), Jeroen Panis (ANB), Hilde Heyrman (VLM), Inge Liekens (VITO), Linda Meiresonne (INBO) • Start: May 2012 • Consultation rounds: 5 • Contact CICES: Via website + CICES coordinators • ‘Final version’ CICES-Be: End of March 2013 (v.6)

  4. 3. Results (1) • Outputs: • CICES-Be v.5 based on the recommendations of Belgian experts. • Comparison table between the international CICES classification v4.3 and the CICES-Be v5 classification.

Results (2) • Correlation between CICES & CICES-Be • Provisioning & regulatory services: • Section level in CICES-Be: Water supply, climate regulation, regulation of the biotic environment.  • Nutrition: Organised according to ecosystem of origin in CICES-Be (terrestrial , freshwater, marine). • Regulatory services spit-up based on processes(mediation of waste, toxics and other nuisances). In CICES-Be: Split up according to medium (soil & water, air, noise). • Soil & water-related ESS: • CICES: Separated • CICES-Be: Integrated in 1 category • Relevant ESS for Belgium context in CICES-Be: Ornamental plants & animals, Regulation invasive species, Regulation  human diseases, Natural surroundings around build-up areas.

Results (3) • Cultural services: • Different conceptualised in CICES-Be: • Several C-ESS in CICES: Benefits of other cultural services (e.g. intellectual and representative interactions) • Existence & Bequest: Not included in CICES-BE as they are considered part of valuation methods, and not as self-standing categories for CICES.
