  2. On Nov. 11, 324,512 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 54,186 Selected Reserve Sailors, with 3,580 mobilized Reserves; and 203,578 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy.

  3. Veteran’s Day 11 s 11 s 11 Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert celebrates Veterans Day as the grand marshal of New York City’s 92nd Annual Veterans Day Parade and attends several events throughout the city. On Veterans Day we pay tribute to all who have served and sacrificed in defense of our nation. Veterans Day was first celebrated in 1919 as 'Armistice Day' as a way to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during World War I. In 1954, it evolved into 'Veterans Day' in order to honor all American veterans from all wars. The United States Navy Memorial hosted a wreath-laying ceremony as part of its Veterans Day celebration in Washington, D.C., Nov. 11.

  4. USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) hosts President Obama, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and 8,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Coast Guardsmen and basketball fans for the first-ever Quicken Loans Carrier Classic NCAA basketball game, a celebration of service played on the flight deck, between the North Carolina Tar Heels and Michigan State Spartans.

  5. Navy recruits receive training in preparation for joining the fleet.

  6. There are 8,130 individual augmentees, 3,580 of whom are mobilized Reserves, deployed on the ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations.

  7. There are 284 active ships in service; 147 (52 percent) ships, including four aircraft carriers and five large-deck amphibious ships, and 35 (66 percent) submarines are underway away from homeport.

  8. USS George H. W. Bush and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 fly their last sorties in support of Operation New Dawn. The air wing conducts 16 sorties totaling 71.3 hours of flight time.

  9. The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) conducts flight operations in the Arabian Sea. John C. Stennis is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations and support missions as part of Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

  10. The amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) participates in the Parade of Ships during the 62nd annual Seattle Seafair Fleet Week. Seafair activities allow U.S. and Canadian sailors and Coast Guard personnel to experience the local community and to promote awareness of the maritime forces.

  11. The amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) transits the Indian Ocean. Boxer is underway in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility during a western Pacific deployment.

  12. The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) transits in formation as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship JS Hyuga (DDH 181) transits in the background. Essex and the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) is operating off the coast of Kesenuma in support of Operation Tomodachi.

  13. George Washington Carrier Strike Group and embarked CVW 5 are in Hong Kong for a routine port visit.

  14. The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) returns to Naval Station Norfolk after a six-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

  15. Naval Surface Warfare Center engineers install instrumentation and data acquisition systems aboard USS Wasp (LHD 1) to measure temperatures of thermal exposure on the flight deck from the F-35B, the short takeoff/vertical landing variant of he F-35.

  16. An F/A-18C Hornet assigned to the Golden Dragons of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 192 launches from the Nimitz class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). John C. Stennis is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

  17. Sailors prepare an E2-C Hawkeye assigned to the Golden Hawks of Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 112 for launch aboard the Nimitz class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). John C. Stennis is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

  19. An EA-6B Prowler assigned to the Star Warriors of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 209 taxies during a transient stop at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay. The Star Warriors are a reserve component squadron based out of Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility in Washington, D.C.

  20. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 complete sorties in support of U.S. and coalition forces on the ground in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) .

  21. A T-45C Goshawk assigned to the Eagles of Training Squadron Seven (VT-7) launches from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). Ronald Reagan is conducting operations at sea in support of Naval Air Training Command carrier qualifications.

  22. The “Nightwolves” from Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 77, the Navy’s only fully dedicated counter-illicit trafficking squadron, flies two missions in support of counter-illicit trafficking operations in the Caribbean.

  23. Visitors look at aircraft displays during the Centennial of Naval Aviation Open House and Parade of Flight at Naval Air Station North Island. The Navy is observing the Centennial of Naval Aviation with a series of nationwide events celebrating 100 years of heritage, progress and achievement in naval aviation.

  24. The Makin Island ARG, comprised of Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5, USS Makin Island (LHD 8), USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and the 11th MEU, conduct integrated training off the coast of Southern California and observe the 69th anniversary of the Aug. 17-18, 1942, raid on Makin Island during WWII.

  25. The Navy works at night…. Here Reserve Sailors work on the Combined Forces Maritime Component Commander staff during PANAMAX 2011, one of the largest, annual, multinational maritime exercises in the world.

  26. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (Sea Bees), deployed aboard USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) in support of Continuing Promise 2011, commences projects at a local hospital and at Killick Coast Guard Base near Port Au Prince, Haiti.

  27. Divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 share tactics and techniques with divers from Panama, Belize and Canada in Jamaica.

  28. Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 2 provides harbor defense and port security for Military Sealift Command and Navy ships at Kuwait Naval Base.

  29. USS Newport News (SSN 750) conducts a port visit to Portsmouth, England.

  30. USS Memphis (SSN 691) undergoes inactivation at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

  31. A P-3 from Patrol Squadron 45 assigned to CTF 67 participates in the Moscow International Aviation and Space Salon in Moscow, Russia.

  32. Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Alexis Johnson, from Omaha, Neb., serves as a member of the rifle guard aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) during a burial at sea. The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group is on a scheduled western Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf deployment.

  33. There are 64,645 Full Time Support and Selected Reserve Sailors in the Navy and 3,757 mobilized Reserve Sailors providing overseas contingency operation support.

  34. Sailors aboard HSV-2 Swift conduct small boat maintenance courses at Sekondi Naval Base Dockyard and Maintenance Facility in Sekondi, Ghana, during Africa Partnership Station (APS).

  35. Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella, Italy, personnel provide 98,077 aviation fuel to 31 U.S. and NATO aircraft in support of daily operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet AOR and NATO Operation Unified Protector.

  36. University of Florida Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps midshipmen tour the Trident Training Facility and a ballistic missile submarine at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.

  37. More than 200 surface warriors attend the Surface Navy Association West Coast Symposium at Naval Base San Diego.

  38. USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Sailors saved about $6.2 million by renovating their berthing spaces and painting ship spaces.

  39. NSWC Corona, Calif., engineers aboard USS Lake Erie (CG 70) finalize waterfront integration testing for Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Flight Test Mission FTM-16.
