  3. Millions remained faithful to Catholicism • Church decided to reform institution • Catholic (Counter) Reformation

  4. Ignatius of Loyola • From Loyola, Spain • Turning point in life was when he was injured in war • Thought about past sins and the life of Jesus • 1522: started writing a book called Spiritual Exercises • Had many followers; became known as Society of Jesus

  5. Jesuits • Members were called Jesuits • Jesuits focused on three activities • Founded schools throughout Europe • Converted non-Christians to Catholicism • Stopping the spread of Protestantism

  6. Pope Paul III (1534-1549) • Four important steps • Directed council of cardinals to investigate problems in Church • Approved Jesuit order • Inquisition • Called for a council of church leaders to meet in Trent (northern Italy)

  7. Council of Trent (1545-1563) • Bishops and cardinals agreed on several doctrines • This was successful because they laid a solid foundation of what they stood for

  8. Pope Paul IV • Vigorously carried out the decrees • Index of Forbidden Books

  9. Group Discussion/Venn Diagram • You will be numbered off from 1 to 8 again and this will be the group that you will be working with for this assignment. You will work collaboratively as a group to complete the Compare/Contrast Venn Diagram that deals with the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Reformation. Each group member is required to complete their own copy of the Venn Diagram.

  10. Propaganda Poster • Create a propaganda poster that deals with either the Protestant Reformation or the Catholic Reformation. Remember the goal of the poster is to influence others to want to join your cause. You may work independently or with a partner.
