  3. Importance of Nutrition Provides the body with the nutrients needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Provides energy for cells and organs to work together to battle infection, disease, protect overall health, etc… Provides fuel for the body – Input = output

  9. Make Eating Healthy Fun Encourage children to be a part of menu planning Let children help in the kitchen Allow children to be creative Make gradual improvements – small steps Live by example

  10. Quick and Easy Ideas • Yogurt parfaits • Pumpkin dip with fresh fruit • Fruit kabobs • Carrot & celery sticks • 1 oz. Low-fat dressing or hummus • Trail Mix • Dried fruit • Nuts • Whole grain cereal

Be Prepared The biggest obstacle in getting children to eat healthier is choosing items the are ready, easily prepared and available. • After school, have items that they prepared the day prior ready as a snack. • Take an afternoon and prepare a few meals and freeze them to be pulled throughout the week. • Don’t make eating healthy a dreaded ordeal.

  12. Providing Choices • Remember – your child may not care for everything you like. • They are more likely to eat items they like/choose • Provide a few choices • Allow children to participate in grocery shopping • Fruit • Vegetable

  13. Encourage Trying New Foods Once a week/month commit to introducing a new food • During these meals encourage each child to try at least one bite. • Allow them not to eat all of it if they at least try it. • Have children pick the new food for the week/month. • Be sure to reward.
