  3. About grants.gov • About • Origin of Grants.gov lies with PL 106-107 • A single source for finding grant opportunities. • A standardized manner of searching funding opportunities. • A single source for applying for Federal grants online. • A simplified grant application process with reduction of paperwork. • A unified interface for all agencies to announce their grant opportunities, and for all grant applicants to find and apply for those opportunities.

  4. grants.gov • GTRC, GTARC are registered with Grants.gov • Contracting Officers need 2 separate logins • Moving towards this system as the only interface with federal proposal (grant) submissions • 96,000 applications submitted • 2800 application packages • Constant change • PureEdge, and Adobe Acrobat for some organizations • Adobe 8.1.1: not 8.0.1, 8.1.0, or Adobe Professional

  5. grants.gov • About grants.gov • GTRC, GTARC submissions via grants.gov number in the hundreds • Submission and Confirmation is clear but done by OSP Contracting Officer • Large .xfd (PureEdge Files) take significant time to submit via an online application • Upload to OSP Server: www.ggov.gatech.edu

  6. grants.gov • Challenges • No check status of application beyond submission to Grants.gov and agency retrieval (i.e., assigned to a review group, approved for funding, etc.) • May only see the completed package when the proposal is in the agency’s electronic system. (i.e., view in FastLane or NIH Commons) • Printing (each page, click print, print attachments separately – not one complete package.)

  7. grants.gov • Challenges • Do you have the latest Version of Pure Edge or Adobe? • Verify if having problems. (It gets updated and we aren’t notified!) • New PC? Download the software again! • Again: Adobe 8.1.1+, not Professional!

  10. grants.gov • Every federal agency has its own manual for their grants.gov submission • NSF Grants.gov manual: • http://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/docs/grantsgov.pdf • NSF use Fastlane for File Upload/Replacement • NIH Grants.gov manual: • http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/index.htm • NIH use Grants.gov and resubmit entire proposal • Some are using the SF 424 R&R • Others are using the 424, 424 A, and 424B • File size limited by agency

  11. Proposal Submission Deadlines • Grants.gov proposals: 5 business days prior to submission date. • Electronic (non-Grants.gov) proposals: 48 hours prior to submission the proposal needs to be available to the CO and 24 hours prior to the deadline it needs to be ready to submit • Paper copies need to be in by 2PM if the proposal needs to be sent to the sponsor that same day.

  12. grants.gov • Impact • Notify us as early as you can regarding a submission • PI/faculty/staff do not need to register with grants.gov or have a user name and password (applicant = institution) • Internet Explorer browser works others do not!

  13. grants.gov • Impact (continued) • Time Stamp is the time OSP uploads the file to grants.gov and is completed • Any changes need to be made before the deadline!

  14. grants.gov • Help for faculty • URL: http://www.osp.gatech.edu/grants.shtml • Twelve Step process online • CO’s Tips • Agency Specifics • Download Pure Edge File Help File • Completing an Application Package (not specific to agency requirements) • Proposal File Upload System • Zero error messages before sending to the proposal to the CO!

  15. Other agencies • Grants.gov • NIH new transitional deadline • Everything is on hold until the Adobe switch is completed!
