Northwest Coast Native Americans By Brooke, Sammy, Tommy, Anna, Sam, and Brodie
Food of the Northwest Indians The Indians along the Northwest coast ate whale, salmon, trout, berries, and the three sisters. Did you know that one whale could last a tribe for a whole month? Villages would camp by the river when the salmon were spawning upstream. Some say the salmon was so plentiful, you could walk across their backs without getting your feet wet.
Shelter of the Northwest Indians of the northwest coastal region lived in cedar plank houses. These were made from giant cedar trees or Sequoia trees that lived in this region. A totem pole stood outside the home and told a story of the people.
Clothing • The native Americans who lived along the Northwest coast wore cedar bark clothing. Cedar was waterproof and peeled easily from giant cedar trees.
Important facts • The Northwest Indians were rich in natural resources. To show great wealth and importance, chiefs would throw a potlatch. They would spend all year making gifts like canoes, shields, clothing, and totem poles. At the potlatch they would give these gifts away. If anyone wanted to show that they were more important, they would have to have a potlatch and give away even more gifts!
