Background • Climate: • tropical and humid • rainy season extends from June to October • potential for volcanic and earthquake activity throughout the country. • Typhoons are likely from June to November but can occur anytime during the season because it is in the Typhoon Belt • Geography: • 7,107 islands • Many islands are mountainous • No particular borders just a country composed entirely of islands • Surrounds Pacific Ocean • More than one-fourth of the country's fertile soil is under cultivation. • About 25 percent of the land is covered with forests (down from 40 percent a decade ago).

History • Spain had control over the Philippines for nearly 400 years • Japan invaded the Philippines in 1941 until U.S forces returned near the end of WWII • July, 4 1946 the Philippines became an independent republic • Sites: Boracay Beach Chocolate Hills, Bohol Phillipines The Philippine Tarsier

Culture: The People • Predominantly Christian nation • 81% belongs to Roman Catholic Church • English and Filipino (referred to as Tagalog) are official languages • Individualism is considered less important than the family • Casual and Loving but are sensitive people • Manual laborers wear shorts and a T-shirt • Some men, mostly professionals, wear the traditional barong, a white or pastel-colored embroidered shirt that hangs over the pants • Teachers wear a different uniform each week

  5. Culture: Customs and Courtesies • Greetings are friendly and informal • Handshakes are typical • Kumusta ka na? (How are you doing?) is a more formal greeting • Young people must show respect • Use various hand and body movements to communicate • Point by puckering their lips • Younger people kiss the hand to show elder respect • PDA is inappropiate • Guest are treated with great hospitality • Enjoy meeting in public places where drinking is a primary activity • Youth like to socialize

Culture Cont. • Celebrate several national holidays • Christmas is the most celebrated holiday • Family ties are strong • Typical rural housing is the nipa hut, a bamboo structure with a roof of dried palm fronds, usually consisting of one main room and one or two bedrooms • Dating begins in teens • At birth, the father traditionally buries the placenta to ward off evil spirits • The mother keeps the umbilical cord believing that it will keep the child close and obideient. • Filipinos spend leisure time socializing, going to movies, or watching videos • Very Americanized

  7. Typical Foods • Rice is a the main staple • Fish is the primary source of protein • A typical meal might consist of boiled rice, fried fish, a vegetable, and fruit for dessert • Fruit is often eaten for breakfast • In rural areas pork, beef, chicken, goat and dog are favorite meats
