  2. 2 Party System • Era of Good Feelings Ends w/ Return to 2 Parties • Whigs led by Henry Clay (Hamiltonians) • Democrats led by Andrew Jackson (Jeffersonians) • Political Challenges: • A) Westward Expansion / Manifest Destiny • B) Industrial Economy / Industrial Revolution

  3. Who Voted for Who?

  4. Election of 1836 • AJ nominated Martin Van Buren (who oversaw Trail of Tears) • Whigs nominated THREE candidates from 3 different regions • Why? Whigs hoped no one would win required votes and it would go to the H or Reps (where each state had 1 vote) • Strategy failed, MVB is the new POTUS

  5. Panic of 1837 • Banks closed in rapid succession, Unemployment rose, banks called in loans… • Why? AJ’s opposition to Bank • Whigs  blamed Democrats • MVB opposed federal intervention in the Panic, JUST LIKE Pres. Herbert Hoover in the Great Depression. It cost BOTH men the next election • MVB and HH opposite of Barack Obama

Inebriated Campaign of 1840 • Whigs looked poised to win the election • Had a solid candidate in William Henry Tippecanoe Harrison (war hero) • Called “Log Cabin Campaign” and “Hard Cider” Campaign • Whig Party passed out WHH’s favorite drink to voters / also used image of log cabin to symbolize WHH’s humble origins • Whigs ripped MVB as an aristocrat who liked fine wines

  8. Short Lived Success • WHH died less than a month after taking over • John Tyler becomes first VP to succeed Pres. (dubbed “His Accidency”) • Tyler was the anti-Whig (lol) • He vetoed Whig national bank bills, favored expansionism and Democratic positions
