  1. Venn Diagram Notes& Review Ryan Boyd Zach Pelletier

  2. A Venn diagram is a diagram that shows all possible relations between a collection of sets

  3. Questions Pertaining to Probability and Venn Diagrams • P(AUB): Probability of A Union B. This means we add all of the values of A and B. • P(ANB): Probability of A intersection B. In this case we include only the intersection. • P(AIB): Probability of A given B. This means Intersection/given. PB(A): Probability of A given B.

  4. Shade the Following • AUB: ANB:

  5. Example 1: • Out of a total of 50 people, 20 people own a dog, 10 own cats, but 5 own a cat and a dog. • How many people do not own a animal? • Find P(AUB) • Find P(ANB)

  6. Example 2 • 100 people were asked whether they preferred watching traditional TV or watching Netflix. Of these 100 people, 40 said they preferred Netflix. Of these 40 people, 13 said they enjoy watching regular TV as well. 45 people said they enjoy watching TV. • How many people dislike Netflix and TV? • How many people like only regular TV? • How many people like only Netflix?

  7. Example 3 • 30 kids were asked what sport they played. Sixteen said they play hockey, 8 said they they played basketball, and 7 play baseball.  Five said they play both hockey and basketball, and of these, 3 played baseball as well, so how many only play hockey?

  8. Answers • Example 1: 1: 20 people own neither a cat or dog. 2: 25/50 = ½ 3: 5/50 = 1/10 Example 2: 1: 28 people dislike both 2: 32 people like regular TV 3: 27 people like only Netflix Example 3 Answer: 11 kids.
