  2. CAREER PATH… • Your Senior Research Project is a direct reflection of you and the career path you wish to obtain in your life. At the conclusion of your project, you will have a portfolio that includes your biography, your career choice information, research on an institution of higher education where you can receive your training, a college application, a financial aid application, scholarship applications, a professional resume, letter of recommendation, and a job application. A professional job interview will also be required.

WHERE DO I BEGIN? • Create an account at: www.texascollegeandcareer.org • Your LOGIN:___________ PASSWORD:_____ • Take all of three assessments under “Getting to Know Yourself”, save each of the three results, print, and place them in your binder. Write a paragraph (word document) that includes what you learned about yourself from these assessments. Be specific. *Turn in a copy of the three results to your teacher (one copy in your binder) *Turn in a copy of your paragraph to your teacher (one copy in your binder)

  5. WHERE DO I BEGIN continued… • Don't know how much money you will need to earn in the future? Don't know which occupation to choose? No problem! • Go to www.texasrealitycheck.com • Complete Option #1 Reality Check. Complete it the first time as your “dream” life then complete the second time as your “reality” life and print both results. Place them in your binder. • Complete Option #3 Occupation Direct. Complete it the first time as your “dream” life then complete the second time as your “reality” life and print both results. Place them in your binder. • Write a paragraph (word document) describing your experience and what you learned from this website. Make sure you write in complete sentences and give specific examples. *Turn in a copy of your paragraph to your teacher (one copy in your binder)

MAKE A CHOICE! • TIME TO CHOOSE YOUR CAREER! • What type of education is required to obtain your career choice? • What are the job duties? • Salary? • Benefits? • Drawbacks? • Job outlook? • Write an essay ( word document) describing your career path. Pretend that your reader doesn’t know anything about the career. Use a lot of description and be specific! *Turn in a copy of your essay to your teacher (one copy in your binder)

  7. NOW WHAT? • Where will you go to get the education you need in order to obtain your career? Return to: www.texascollegeandcareer.org and complete the college search, college list, college compare and resources. Print each search result and place in your binder. *Turn in a copy of your search results to your teacher (one copy in your binder).

NOW WHAT continued… • Research at least two institutions of higher education (trade schools, junior/community colleges, and/or public/private universities). • Now that you’ve chosen your place of higher education, research everything that an incoming freshman will need to know to apply to that college. Use the website of the institution for your information.

  9. NOW WHAT continued… • Print out a checklist, if applicable. If not, make one! (Excel) • Print out an application for admission and complete it. • Register for the ACT or TSI. (see Mrs. Lea for assistance) • Degree Plan? • How many hours and what classes will be required? *How much will it cost for your training/degree? • Calculate the total cost: tuition and fees, include housing, if applicable. *Turn in a copy of your application to your teacher (one copy in your binder).

NOW WHAT continued… Apply for two of the following scholarships: • Wolfforth Lion’s Club Scholarship for Reese students, • FrenshipFoundation Scholarship (http://www.frenship.us/cms/lib3/TX01917862/Centricity/domain/32/foundation/Scholarship%20Application%202013-%20Reese.docx)for Reese students, • Texas Association for Alternative Education scholarship (http://www.taae.org/ ) for Texas alternative school students. • Ask your English teacher for a copy of these scholarships. Search for an additional scholarship on your own and complete it. (Make sure you qualify and notice the deadlines.) A total of three scholarships will be required. Read the directions carefully! Short answer questions and essays will be included as well as letters of recommendation.

  15. WHAT’S NEXT continued… • Now research available jobs in the Lubbock area that will accept your degree/education/training. • Print out a job application and fill it out. *Turn in a copy of your application to your teacher (one copy in your binder)

MOCK INTERVIEW PROCEDURES • Write a letter of inquiry to a potential employer in your profession of choice • Employer (Reese Staff) will notify applicant (you) of the date and time of your interview • Dress professional • Fill out an application at the mock interview • Use appropriate interview skills • Show your knowledge of your profession

  22. MOCK INTERVIEW PROCEDURES Things to bring to the mock interview: • Research binder • Additional copy of your professional resume • Information on three personal references (name, address, contact number, relationship)

  23. Sample Interview Questions: • What unique skills and talents do you have that would benefit our company? • What’s the one accomplishment you’re most proud of? Why? • What would you do if management made a decision that you didn’t agree with? • Why should we hire you over the other applicants? These are just a few questions that may or may not be asked. Be prepared and confident!
