REGISTRATION 2014-15 Rising 8th grade Timeline Jan. 17: students hear this presentation Jan. 24: Teacher Recommendation Day (students to bring registration form home) Feb. 5: Students return registration form to English teacher Feb. 10-13: Students meet in small groups with counselor to register

PROMOTION POLICY • Must pass all four of the core subjects to be promoted to 8th grade. • Math • Social Studies • Science • English (only 2 may be taken in summer school)

WORLD LANGUAGEOPTIONS • Spanish I • French I • Latin I Notes: • Required for Advanced Studies Diploma (3 yrs of 1 or 2 yrs of 2) • Earns HS credit • Students should expect daily study and practice • “But all of my friends are taking it!” (not a good reason) • Options are numbers driven (DL / not offered)

THE REGISTRATION FORM • Teacher recommendations for English and math will be marked on the registration form (Jan. 24) • If Pre-AP recommended, a contract will be attached. Cannot register for PreAP without contract. • Must be turned into English teachers by Feb. 5 (with parent’s signature) FEB 5
THE REGISTRATION FORM • Questions about recommendations should be directed to teachers • Counselors will meet with students individually beginning Feb. 10
PARENT INVOLVEMENT • Parents need to be involved in registration choices • Parents can help students make good choices based on current academic needs, student interest, and future plans • Parents can help students understand the importance of making good choices now rather than “waiting”

SCHEDULE CHANGES Per RCPS Policy, only made if: 1. Human or computer error (e.g. we entered the wrong course information) 2. Failure to meet course prerequisite 3. Change in program of studies. (e.g. moving from an advanced class to a regular class) 4. Failure in a previous year under the same teacher. 5. Recommendation of Child Study, IEP, or Eligibility Committee
