WHYALLA SOLAR CITY SOUTH AUSTRALIA SOLAR STATE ?
ENERGY INITIATIVES WHYALLA SOLAR CITY? • Minimum energy efficiency standards • Mandatory solar hot water heaters, equivalent CO2 reducing technology • Solar hot water subsidy • Funding for wind speed study/Pt. Lowly Peninsula • 20% renewable energy, 100% policy adopted • 7 star rated housing project • Council funded ANU feasibility study (1998) on renewable energy/desalination • Big Dish project • UniSA Regional Sustainability Centre/Institute for Sustainable Systems and Technologies
ANU BIG DISH Energy production + desalination = Whyalla Solar Oasis
WHY THE BIG DISH? • Multi purpose – electricity generation, thermal applications, thermochemical energy conversion • Baseload and peak load • High temperatures for thermochemical production of hydrogen and emission free liquid fuels – gasification of coal & biomass, natural gas reforming, thermochemical water splitting • Integrates with industry standard turbines • Modular, suitable for mass production • Scaleable, suitable for niche applications to large utility scale • Wide choice of sites, less planning issues – marginal land, grazing lands, co-located fossil power plants
ADVANCED ELECTRICITY STORAGE TECHNOLOGY • Partnership – Federal Government, Wizard Power, Whyalla City Council • $16 million demonstration project • Big Dish combined with molten salt energy storage or ammonia dissociation and ammonia synthesis process to produce on demand peak load or base load power. • International showcase for baseload and on-demand solar power
Thermochemical Energy Storage for On-Demand Power Ammonia Synthesis Reactors 500oC 700oC NH3 + 66.8kJ/mol ↔ 1/2N2 + 3/2H2 • Builds on over 100 years of industrial ammonia production • NO losses at point of storage – chemical bonds not thermal storage • Indefinite storage time - minutes, days, weeks, months • Suitable for mega-scale solar fields 500MW+ • Enables hybridisation with molten salt thermal storage for 250MW+ scaleability • Enables separation of power plant from solar field by using ammonia as energy transport fluid • Wizard Power hybrid thermochemical / thermal storage patent lodged 2009 and being evaluated for implementation as part of Whyalla Energy Storage pilot plant
WHERE TO NEXT? • Contract signed with the AGO • Site work has commenced • Big Dish, molten salt energy storage and power block construction starts 2010 • Initially 4 dishes (.5 MW)
The Big One! • 40 MW (plus) solar thermal plant subject to successful bid – Federal Renewable Energy Demonstration Program • $230 million investment • = installing 40,000 standard 1 kw photovoltaic systems. • 65,000 tonne reduction in GHG emissions • Equivalent to taking 18,000 medium sized cars of the road.
