  2. Holy BookTorah • Includes all Jewish law and tradition. • In Judaism the actions are more important than beliefs. • The Torah is the first five books of Moses • It was given to Moses in written form with oral commentary.

  3. LeaderAbraham • “ The Hebrew leader Abraham founded Judaism” • “ He founded it around 2000 B.C.” • “ Moses gave the Jews the Torah around 1250 B.C.

  4. Religious Symbols • “ Mezuzah is a reminder of the commandments.” • Magen David is a modern universal Jewish symbol. 3. “ The Menorah is the ancient universal Jewish symbol of Judaism.”

Historical Background • The Jewish Diaspora begins in the year 587 B.C.E. • The Kingdom of Judea was conquered by the Babylonians. • A large number of the Jewish population was exiled when the temple was destroyed in Jerusalem. • The Jews are longing to return to the Land of Israel, they live in Diaspora.

Holy Day/ PilgrimageYom Kippur • It is a day set aside to atone the sins from the past year. • Yom Kippur means “ Day of Atonement.” • It occurs on the 10th day of Tishri. • In the synagogue in prayer most of the holiday. • “ The evening service that starts Yom Kippur is known for KolNidre named for the Prayer that begins the service.”

  10. Dreidal • It is used in the dreidal game. • A rabbi used a dreidal to fool the Greeks so they would not know they were studying the Torah which had been outlawed. • The letters nun,gimmel,hey, and shin are supposed to stand for the four kingdoms which tried to destroy them in ancient times.
