Bed shapers are available in pan-type and spool-type versions. Spool-type bed shapers are not readily available on a commercial basis, but can easily be constructed. A good spool-type shaper should have flanges to firm and pack the sides of the beds. These plans provide designs and dimensions for spool-type bed shapers to fit several row sizes and configurations. The designs can easily be adjusted to accommodate different row sizes or multiple rows. These designs are based on 12-inch OD steel tubing. The only difficult part of the construction is forming the conical flanges. This is best done using metal rollers by slipping the steel between incremental bends. It can be done by any reasonably well qualified machine shop. The finished rollers can be filled with sand or water to add weight. Sand is heavier and will not corrode the steel. The rollers can then be hung in pillow block bearings suspended from a toolbar.
