Sanford, Maine 2007 SS/HS Site • One district: 5 elementary; 1 junior high; 1 high school, 1 technical high school • Population of ~20,000 • Formerly thriving community now has 28.5% of families below poverty level, 11.7% unemployment (highest in the state) • Highest foreclosure rate in the state last year • Designated as a “medically-underserved” area

Hot Springs School District, Arkansas 2008 SS/HS Site • 3800 students PK-12 • 8 schools-4 elementary; 1 intermediate; 1 middle; 1 high; 1 ALE • 75% Free and Reduced Lunch • 50% White and 50% Minority Enrollment • Magnet Elementary Schools • International Baccalaureate (IB) • Math and Science • Technology and Space • Performing Arts

  5. “Communities of One” (Clinton-Essex) New York 2008 SS/HS Site • Two counties with 120,000 residents • 5 rural school districts with 6000 students • >100 miles between northernmost and southernmost schools • Counties’ families are the poorest and least educated in the state • 93% White • Unemployment rate higher than state average
