The heart, located in the thoracic cavity behind the sternum and between the lungs, serves as a vital double pump in the cardiovascular system. It operates through a protective sac known as the pericardium and consists of three layers of tissue: the epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium. The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs, while the left side receives oxygenated blood from the lungs to distribute to the rest of the body.
