  9. In the News Viterbi's Distance Education Network is a model for future technology plans at USC. Adrian Florido: 2/1/06 Section: News Distant learning. USC students who cannot attend classes on campus can watch lectures online and participate through webcams. C.L. Max Nikias, USC provost … plans to offer classes to students in off-campus locations who would otherwise be unable to attend USC.As technology-enhanced learning becomes more prevalent in colleges and universities across the country, … USC will embrace already existing models for providing students with alternative and supplemental learning methods…

  11. In the News USC Distance Learning Goes International LOS ANGELES and SAN RAMON, Calif., Jan. 6 An educational revolution has spread worldwide. The USC Engineering's innovative Distance Education Network (DEN) and ChevronTexaco Corp. announced today DEN is now offering its innovative smart oilfield technologies program to ChevronTexaco engineers around the world.

  12. Webcasting

  13. Webcasting

  14. How DEN Works: Enrollment Den students • Meet same admissions requirements as other USC graduate students • Bachelor of Science degree in Eng., Math, or Sci from accredited school • GPA or 3.0 or above (on 4.0 scale) • USC Graduate application • Complete same course requirements to earn degree • Adhere to the same academic standards • Receive diploma from the University of Southern California

  15. How DEN Works: Lectures Over 120 courses available per semester Instruction • Lecture recorded, streamed to webcast • Written materials digitized (*.pdf, *.ppt) • Synchronize digital material and video Remote participation • Streamed lectures available live and on-demand • DSL/Cable recommended • Windows Media Player (free) • Students can phone into classroom with questions • Students can chat online during live class • Webcasts available all semester On campus students have access to time- delayed webcasts.

  16. How DEN Works: Materials Handouts and homework • Notes written by professor in class posted along-side e-learning video • Handouts posted online prior to class. • Homework assignments transmitted to and from DEN via e-mail and/or fax Exams • Students in Los Angles attend exams in-person • Distant students’ exams are proctored at testing centers • Ensures academic integrity Online applications supplement experience • Blackboard, WebEx, Macromedia Breeze

  17. DEN’s E-Learning User Interface Presentations and class notes can be downloaded and printed! Live and threaded chat discussions to encourage interactivity User-friendly interface

  18. In the News Ten Trends for 2006 in Online Education From Online Graduate School Pioneer; USC Viterbi School Of Engineering DEN Predicts Dramatic Growth in 2006 Business Wire; 3/21/2006 The USC VSoE, one of the top engineering schools in the U.S., forecasts dramatic growth in students and offerings at online colleges this year. Established in 1972 USC VSoE's Distance Education Network is a pioneer and one of the oldest distance learning programs in the country. Kelly Goulis, executive director of DEN, forecasts the following:

  19. In the News Ten Trends for 2006 in Online Education From Online Graduate School Pioneer; USC Viterbi School Of Engineering DEN Predicts Dramatic Growth in 2006 -- The majority of distance learning students will shift from domestic students to those residing outside of the United States. -- The use of mobile technologies will … enable "anytime, anywhere" learning as universities make their content downloadable …. -- More top universities will provide online offerings... as brick-and-mortar schools prove that quality education can be sustained the perception of "online degrees" improves.

  20. In the News Ten Trends for 2006 in Online Education From Online Graduate School Pioneer; USC Viterbi School Of Engineering DEN Predicts Dramatic Growth in 2006 -- Distance learning will shift from a passive … to an interactive learning environment where students engage … in real-time. -- More employers will support distance learning, … students can have immediate access to experts in fields in the industries in which they work. -- There will be … high quality virtual lab simulations - rich learning environments in which those who can't physically access a lab can participate...

  21. DEN Students Succeed • More than 80% completion rate • Since 1972, DEN has graduated thousands of professional engineers • Students perform as well and in many cases better than on-campus

  22. Personal Observations Experience • Instructor of Computer Graphics, 2001 • 80 local students • 8 remote (7 via satellite, 1 via webcast) Observations • No difference between local and remote students • Course management systems are essential • USC & DEN both use Blackboard • Broadcasting makes teaching more difficult • Hard to please everyone • Class preparation more time consuming!
