  2. Introduction • South America is divided into many countries and regions. • The climate is tropical in the sou

  3. Physical Geography of South America • South America is the world’s fourth largest continent • South America lies just below the continent of North America • South America is very wide in the north. It narrows to a point in the south.

  4. The Andes • The Andes mountain range is one of South America’s key features • The Andes range was created when two of Earth’s plates collided and pushed land upward • The Andes are so tall they can be seen easily from space.

  5. The Amazon Basin • The amazon contains more water than any other river on earth. • Streams that run down from the Andes mountains create the Amazon River. • The Amazon River is the world’s second largest River.

  6. The Plains • The biggest plain is the pampas in the southeast. • South America plains as well as mountains and rivers. • The Atacama is the driest place on earth.

  7. One continent, Many cultures • South America has many different cultures because people settled down, they felt no need to cross mountains and other natural barriers.

  8. mA • The continent largest city is San Paulo, Brazil with about 19 million residents.

  9. City Locations • Most large South America cities lie near coast or rivers.
