  1. Judaism in Australia pre-1945

  2. 1788 First Jews arrived as convicts in the First Fleet on 26th January.

  3. 1788-1852 Almost a thousand Jewish convicts came to NSW. Very few were violent criminals, and most were skilled workers such as tailors, watchmakers, shoemakers and even orange sellers!

  4. 1817 Establishment of the first Jewish society in Australia: ‘Burial society’, which organised a Jewish section in the cemetery.

  5. 1820 The first Jewish services took place in Sydney.

  6. 1828 A congregation - the forerunner of the present Great Synagogue - came into being.

  7. 1945 The first meeting of the NSW Board of Deputies took place, to co-ordinate the growing Jewish community; act as its advocate and to fight anti-Semitism.
