  1. Research Questions for the Science Project

  2. Learn everything you can about your topic • Scientists find out everything about their topic that is available, • Use a search engine to look up your topic on the internet • Go to an encyclopedia and search your topic • Find books about your topic • READ, READ, READ • TAKE NOTES

  3. Stem competition projects • The MOST POPULAR STEM competition is the egg drop competition. • The 6th grade competition will be held on November 15 and 16. • In the egg drop competition, students will create a container that holds a raw egg. The student will place a raw egg into their container and drop it from the 2nd floor balcony to the lower floor (bus lobby). If the egg does not crack, the project will move to the next level of competition. (December 5 at the Hines Science Fair.)

  4. STEM competition projects • Many students have selected the plane or boat competitions. These projects will be judged on December 5 at the Hines Science Fair. • In the plane competition, students must make a plane using recycled objects. The plane flying the farthest will go on to the next level of competition. • In the boat competition, students will make an electric boat. The boat with the fastest time will be eligible for the next level of competition.

  5. Traditional projects • Several students have decided to go the traditional route and research a variety of topics. • If you need ideas about projects “www.sciencebuddies.org” is an excellent source of information. • One goal of science projects is for students to select a project that interests them and learn more about it while having fun. • (And believe me the competition is always very interesting and fun.)

  6. Questions you can not research Will my project work? Will my egg break? How fast will my boat/plane go? How far will my plane/boat go? What will be the result of my experiment? Which candy is the favorite of my friends? THESE QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED AFTER YOUR EXPERIMENT AND ARE A PART OF THE CONCLUSION.

  7. Questions to research • What is the history of the egg drop competition? • What is the anatomy of an egg? • How or why do planes fly? • What will make a boat more boyant (float)? • How do I control a boat or an airplane? • How important are wings to an airplane? • What prevents an egg from cracking? • How can boats carry weight and still stay afloat? • What is the history of flight? (Wright brothers)

  8. More Possible Questions to research • How does fertilizer cause a plant to grow? • When were potato chips developed? • Who developed/created the first potato chip? • Who selects flavors for a potato chip? • How is candy made? • What is the difference in chocolates? (dark, semi-sweet, milk chocolate, white chocolate) • How does water change from a solid to a liquid and then to a gas?

  9. Other suggested research questions by students • What can I do so the egg will not break when dropped? • Is it possible to defy gravity? • Are dogs left and right pawed? • What have other people used as an egg drop container? • Which type of ink (or type of pen) does not smear or run? • What is ink made out of? • How does ink get it’s color?

  10. More research questions • What kind of chocolate do most people like? • What is the best way to protect an egg? • Which type of egg has the hardest shell? • How are Starburst candies made? • What is the history of Hershey candy? • How do clouds form? • What is air pollution? • How many people have a photographic memory? • How do florists change the color of carnations?

  11. Final notes • If, after doing research, your child wishes to change his/her project just write a note to me and include the new topic, problem, independent and dependent variables. • This should be an enjoyable learning experience for your child. If the topic is frustrating to her/him, please do change the topic of the project.
