  5. Introduction Turin ( Torino ) it’s Italy’s fourth-largest city and has an illustrious past, the history of Turin has been strictly linked to the history of Italy. The city surrounds a part of the Po river and it is situated near the Piedmont’s Alps.

  6. History of Turin At first, the city was a simple Celtic or Ligurian settlement, that became the Roman colony of Augusta Taurinorum.

  7. History of Turin In succeeding years, Goths, Lombards and Franks tramped through the city. In 1563 the Savoys abandoned their old capital of Chambéry (now in France) to set up court in Turin.

  15. Palazzo Madama The front was added by Filippo Juvarra in 1721 when it lost its defence function and it became an elegant palace. This museum has rich and heterogeneous collections: paintings, furniture, carvings, ceramics, old enamels, glassware, ivories, tapestries etc.

  16. Palazzo Carignano Palazzo Carignanois a palace where Carlo Alberto and Vittorio Emanuele were born and which is the original creation of the architect Guarino Guarini. In 1848 the elliptical central hall, became the chamber of the first Subalpine Parliament. The main floor's rooms of Palazzo Carignano give hospitality to the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento.

Chapel of the Holy Shroud The Dome of San Giovanni contains a chapel with a baroque cupola, which is the so-called Cappella della Sacra Sindone (Chapel of the Holy Shroud) where there is the silver shrine containing the presumed shroud of Christ. The Shroud is a 4,36 metres long and 1,11 metres wide sheet, which has a human imprint impressed on it.
